Jeecob’s Story: Worldwide School Meals

Before the sun rises, nine-year-old Jeecob is already awake in his small home nestled in the rolling hills of the southern Philippines. He buttons his school uniform, carefully maneuvering around his parents, as the tension of blurred hope and worry fills the home. There is rice for breakfast, again, but not much else. He only has a few minutes to eat before he and his sister set off on the 20-minute walk to school, while their parents leave for another day of searching for uncertain work.

For children Jeecob’s age in this community, school is not a given. Many leave to work, contributing what little they can to overstretched household budgets. But for Jeecob, a guaranteed meal at school is what makes education possible.

Without school meals, hunger is a daily risk for children like Jeecob. In some areas of the Philippines, poverty affects as many as one in three households. Just like in the US, in the Philippines the rising cost of food is outpacing wages, forcing families to make impossible trade-offs between meals, medicine, and rent. Jeecob’s family knows this reality well.

For households already struggling to get by, small disruptions can have devastating consequences, especially in a region prone to typhoons, floods, and landslides. These disasters repeatedly damage homes, wash away crops, and cripple local infrastructure, leaving thousands of families vulnerable.

In rural areas, agriculture is the primary employer. These are jobs without salaries, benefits, or certainty. The need for workers is dependent on weather, seasonal demand, and availability. When harvests fail, income disappears overnight.

Every day brings new challenges, and food is often the biggest concern. For Jeecob’s mom, Rowena, the pressure of providing for her family is constant.

“We try our best to meet our daily needs. My husband’s work is irregular, and I do part time on weekends as a storekeeper to augment the basic needs of my family,” she says.

To Jeecob, one storm can mean empty plates for his family – for how long, he can never predict. And to his parents, a meal at school is not just nourishment for their children; it’s a lifeline that helps the whole household.

Unlike public schools in the U.S., most Filippino schools do not receive government funding for meals. In recent years, shifts in national funding have left local governments unable to cover the gap, creating a shortfall for the school-based meal program. With your support, Feed the Children is able to be a global partner to reach children like Jeecob and provide food where it is needed most.

Knowing her children will eat at school gives Jeecob’s mother relief.

“I am very thankful my son receives support from Feed the Children. They help our community, and in return, I am doing my part through cooking for the school meal program,” she shares.

When parents face hunger and hardship, children feel it first: through hunger, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating in school. When asked about what the school meals mean to her community, Rowena does not hesitate to answer.

“Because of Feed the Children, many children are inspired to go to school and have minimized hunger among children. They are a big support to our community,” she shares.

Children like Jeecob deserve to wake up knowing they will be fed today. With your gift, you can make that possible.

“Thank you for the food and school supplies!” – Jeecob
