Helping Communities Raise Healthier Children
Yadira is a committed mother to three growing boys. Every morning, she wakes up to prepare their breakfast and makes sure their backpacks are packed before they head off to school. She gives each child a hug and kiss as she sees them out the door, waving them off with full bags and wishes for a great day.
Cooking for her children, making sure they’re prepared for the day ahead, are both simple acts – a basic part of parenting, so straightforward they’re almost an expectation. But for Yadira and her family, they mean so much more.
There was a time when having food to cook and school supplies to pack up was not a guarantee.
Yadira and her family live in a small, rural community in Honduras. The area is remote, and not well off. Work is hard to find, especially the kind that provides a steady paycheck. A single difficulty causes a cascading reaction: no work meant no money, no food, poor health, and, for her children, less energy for school and an education.
For Yadira, it was equal parts heartbreak and frustration. Her sons – 13-year-old Jeyson, 10-year-old Darwin, and six-year-old Diego – were smart, kind, good kids. They tried their hardest, despite the difficult circumstances facing them.
Didn’t these boys – didn’t every child in Yadira’s community – deserve the same opportunities as other children?

No matter where a child lives or what their community’s circumstances, all children should have the resources they need to survive and thrive. Together, donor support and Feed the Children worked to make that ideal a reality – an act of love that many so many more possible!
Holistic community support, including seeds for home garden and the training needed to use them, Care Groups for maternal health, and vitamin supplementation, benefitted the entire community. Children received school supplies, and a school meal program was created to make sure that no child would go hungry in class. Yadira even joined the program as a volunteer to help cook for the students!

The programs freed up Yadira’s limited financial resources, allowing her to do more for her boys and invest in their futures.
“Before, I worried about not being able to give them everything they needed, but now I feel that my children have more opportunities, and I have more knowledge to take care of them,” Yadira shares. “I feel grateful and at peace because now my children have what they need to study and eat well. This support has given us hope for a better future.”
