Kevin’s Story: Celebrating World Children’s Day

Meet Kevin! He’s a bubbly, outgoing four-year-old with a heart as big as his smile. It’s a smile that shines through more often these days – a testament to the life-changing difference your support can make.

Kevin’s early years were marked by hardship. He was born in the rural community of Palones, El Salvador, a country with a high rate of child poverty. His grandparents took him in at birth and have always been his sole guardians. Although they adore Kevin, their age made it difficult to provide for him. Once a skilled construction worker, his grandfather developed an eye condition that made it impossible for him to continue working. Kevin’s grandmother took on any work she could find, from washing clothes to ironing, but it was never enough:

“I lived in constant worry,” she recalls. “There were many days when all I could give him to eat were tortillas.”

Watching his grandparents struggle affected Kevin, too. Although he was too young to fully grasp his situation, he realized that something was causing his beloved grandparents to worry.

Things began to change for Kevin and his family when they joined Feed the Children’s nutrition program. The food packages they received became a lifeline, easing the strain on the family and ensuring that Kevin would be able to eat the meals he needed to grow up strong and healthy.

Kevin’s favorite breakfast for his grandma to make him now is a glass of milk along with fried eggs. Lunch and dinner are usually rice-based meals – “His favorite is the rice,” his grandmother says – of which Kevin eats his fill.

“Now, I don’t have to worry as much about what he’s going to eat,” his grandmother shares. “I’m thankful to God for the help Feed the Children has given us. I feel more at peace knowing my grandson has more to eat.”

Every hungry child deserves a happy ending to their story, just like Kevin. This World Children’s Day, we ask that you continue to support Feed the Children, and with your help, we can rewrite hunger into hope!
