Help for a Neighbor
Feed the Children was recently honored with an invitation to participate in the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s 50th anniversary celebration! It was a great event, and we were able to provide food, essentials, and books for 400 families.
Our favorite part – of any event – is getting to meet the wonderful people there and sharing their stories with you!
Towards the end of the event, we met Chris, a mom of two, and her daughter Lara. After a fun day at the celebration, they swung by the Resource Rally line to pick up boxes.
“My sixteen-year-old, she’s autistic, and she loves to read. She’s going to love these books,” Chris said.
The box of household and cleaning items was also important. As Chris explained, “Whether it’s WIC or SNAP, none of the benefits that are available for families that are low-income cover household essentials. Cleaning supplies, paper supplies, can be expensive.”
The extra bit of help came at a perfect time for Chris and her two girls. Over the last few years the family has experienced more than its fair share of financial setbacks. Their vehicle broke down – twice – leaving Chris with no means of getting her girls to school, doctor’s appointments, or even going grocery shopping, until she paid for its repair. That, on top of regular expenses like food, insurance, clothing and shoes for the girls, school supplies, and other bills left Chris feeling as though she was falling behind.
“There are lot of instances where it happens that we’re at zero at the end of the month, every month,” she said. “It’s kind of sad.”
Chris has high hopes for her kids and wants them to have big dreams for themselves, no matter the challenges they face. She’s doing everything in her power to make it happen, and your support provides further encouragement: they’re not alone, and their goals are not out of reach!
