Education – U.S.

Every child deserves a good education. But some kids have a hard time studying and remaining focused in school. They’re struggling with a challenge that’s invisible to their peers and teachers, and many feel like they have nowhere to turn.

These children have sadness in their eyes. Fatigue in their voices.
They know that their lives are different, that they would be ashamed if anyone discovered their secret. Fear and loneliness weigh constantly on their hearts, and sometimes the burden is nearly too much to bear.

They have no home.

There are over 1.3 million homeless and at-risk students in America. They move between hotel rooms, shelters, and relatives’ houses. Some stay with friends, couch-surfing until they have to find a new place to sleep. They have no stability, no place to call their own.

They study in libraries, in youth shelters, and at cafes. Many of them have no place to keep their belongings, so they carry everything with them at all times.

These children face challenges that many of us can only imagine, in their determination to move beyond their circumstances.

At Feed the Children, we are committed to nurturing that spirit of courage.

Backpacks that build hope

Children need a good education today to have hope for a better tomorrow.

Many of these children use a plastic sack or paper bag to carry their papers, pencils, and books to school. They can’t afford school supplies, and a new backpack would be impossible – even if it would make them feel like the other kids.

To meet this need, Feed the Children has distributed over 1,000,000 backpacks full of school supplies, personal care items, and snacks to homeless children through H.E.L.P. (Homeless Education Literacy Program) since 2006.

Equipping teachers to empower their students

Teachers know that without the right tools for learning, children face overwhelming odds. Because they are so passionate about helping children, many reach into their own pockets to provide educational materials for their students, but the costs can be staggering.

Feed the Children supports the teachers in our nation’s struggling schools by inviting them to shop for free classroom and school supplies at one of our three Teacher Stores. These stores benefit more than 525,000 students across the country during the school year.

“…it’s just like overwhelming. It’s amazing, the donations that have been given to us because this, you know, a lot of this stuff would come out of our pockets, so we’re just really excited and in awe of all the donations.”
