1,600 Families to Receive Food and Essentials

HOUSTON (Jan. 3, 2012) – Feed The Children will deliver four semi tractor-trailers full of food and essentials to help 1,600 families during three separate events on Thursday, Jan. 5.

• One event will begin at 10 a.m. at Langston Family Life Center (2814 Quitman Street, Houston, TX). Hosted by Target Hunger to help 800 families.
• A second event will begin at noon at Denver Harbor Multi Service Center (6402 Market St., Houston, TX). Hosted by Target Hunger to help 400 families.
• The last event will begin at 2 p.m. at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church (6005 North Wayside, Houston, TX).  Hosted by Target Hunger to help 400 families.
Target Hunger has pre-identified families receiving the boxes. Each family will receive a 25-pound box of food, a 10-pound box of personal care items and a box of Avon products. The boxes are designed to help a family of four for up to one week.

The distribution is part of Feed The Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 320,000 families across the country since it began in 2009.

More than one in four children living in Harris County (27.5 percent) is considered impoverished. In fact, the number of children living in poverty in Texas (1,751,189) could fill Reliant Stadium more than 24 times.

"Our Americans Feeding Americans project helps those affected by the economic downturn,” said Tony Sellars, spokesperson for Feed The Children. "A lot of these people considered themselves middle class just a few years ago and for the first time in their lives, have not been able to provide for their families. This distribution will provide relief for them at a crucial time.”
