FEED THE CHILDREN TO HELP LOS ANGELES FAMILIES

800 Families to Receive Food and Essentials for the Holidays

LOS ANGELES (December 2, 2011) – Feed The Children will bring two truckloads of food and essentials to Los Angeles on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The items will be distributed at 9 a.m. to 800 families at St. Francis Center (1835 South Hope Street).
Feed The Children partner agency St. Francis Center has identified the recipient families. Each family will receive a 25-pound box of food, a 10-pound box of essentials including household products, personal hygiene products, and a box of Avon products. The items are designed to help a family for up to one week.
The distribution is part of Feed The Children’s Americans Feeding Americans Caravan, which has helped more than 310,000 families across the country since it began in 2009. This Christmas, Feed The Children’s 2011 Holiday Caravan is delivering food and essentials to more than 227,000 Americans.
“This event will be our biggest holiday distribution ever! We are grateful for the support and generous contributions from Feed the Children. Through this special giveaway, we can share the joys of the holidays with families and individuals who otherwise wouldn't have the means to do so,” said Jill Remelski, St. Francis Center’s executive director.
More than one in five children living in California (22 percent) is considered impoverished, according to the American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.
"Our Americans Feeding Americans project helps those affected by the economic downturn,” said Tony Sellars, spokesperson for Feed The Children. "This distribution will provide relief for them at a crucial time.”

St. Francis Center
St. Francis Center has provided food security for homeless and near homeless families and individuals in downtown Los Angeles for almost 40 years. While its focus historically has been to provide guests with hunger relief through its soup kitchen and pantry, recently staff has been working to advance programs by focusing on improving nutrition standards and instilling healthy eating habits in the daily lives of near homeless families and individuals.
